US 53 at Hwy 68/Britt Rd (CSAH 68) - J-Turn Project

About this Project

St. Louis County, in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), is leading a project to construct a J-Turn on US 53 at Hwy 68/Britt Rd (CSAH 68) located near Britt in 2026. This project is funded through the Local Partnership Program

The County Road Safety Plan ranks this intersection 11 out of 1,488 intersections which places this intersection in the top one (1) percent by risk. The County Road Safety Plan recommends construction of a J-Turn on US 53 at this intersection. This project will include installation of roadway lighting to provide illumination of the intersection and U-turns. J-Turns and roadway lighting are proven safety countermeasures to reduce the risk of serious crashes. MnDOT produced a video about J-Turns which describes their benefits and how they work. At the intersection of US 53 and Hwy 68/Britt Rd (CSAH 68)

Traffic Impacts

The median opening on US 53 at Hwy 68/Britt Rd will be closed at the beginning of construction. Northbound and southbound traffic on US 53 will be maintained throughout construction. Eastbound traffic on Britt Rd intending to cross US 53 and southbound traffic on US 53 intending to turn left onto Hwy 68 will be detoured 0.4 mile south to Britt Bypass (CSAH 106). Westbound traffic on Hwy 68 intending to cross US 53 and northbound traffic on US 53 intending to turn left onto Britt Rd will be detoured 0.9 mile north to the next median opening.
