Overview:

St. Louis County is leading a project in 2026 to reconstruct 3rd Ave North/Main St (CSAH 100) beginning at a point 0.20 mile east of MNTH 135 and ending at 1st Ave North for a total distance of approximately 1.08 miles. To address the poor pavement condition, St. Louis County will also mill and overlay the portion of Main St (CSAH 100) beginning at 1st Ave North and ending at the railroad crossing for a total distance of 0.12 mile in conjunction with this reconstruction project. The reconstruction project design is based on the preliminary layout that was developed from the CSAH 100 Corridor Study which started in March 2024 and completed in November 2024. This reconstruction project is necessary because the pavement section and curb and gutter on 3rd Ave North/Main St (CSAH 100) are at the end of their service life.

Key project components include:

  1. Construct a raised median on 3rd Ave North between Erie St and Hill St. An opening in the median will be provided for the Embarrass Vermillion Federal Credit Union and Lakehead Constructors.
  2. Construct a 6 ft sidewalk along the south side of 3rd Ave North between Erie St and Hill St.
  3. Install enhanced pedestrian crossings that utilize RRFBs (pedestrian activated flashers) on 3rd Ave North at Hill St and 1st St.
  4. Construct a mini-roundabout at the intersection of Main St and 3rd Ave North.
  5. Widen the sidewalks on Main St from 10 ft to 15 ft. Parking lanes will be reduced from 17 ft to 12 ft.

The reconstruction project in 2026 will end at 1st Ave North in downtown Aurora to avoid a construction overlap conflict with the plan to construct a railroad grade separation bridge on Main St (CSAH 100) at the railroad crossing. While not yet been funded, St. Louis County continues to seek funding for this bridge. More information about the railroad grade separation bridge is listed below on this webpage. Once funded, the project to construct the railroad grade separation bridge will begin at 1st Ave North and end at 3rd Ave South. St. Louis County is also planning a future reconstruction for Main St (CSAH 100) beginning at Hwy 110 (CSAH 110) and ending at 3rd Ave North for a total distance of approximately 0.50 mile. The reconstruction of this southerly portion of Main St (CSAH 100) will be based on the preliminary layout that was developed from the CSAH 100 Corridor Study.

Railroad Bridge Overview

St. Louis County is proposing construction of one grade separated bridge at CSAH 100 railroad crossing in Aurora, MN. The proposed bridge crossing addresses the critical need to ensure connectivity and mobility for the regional transportation network, particularly freight and EMS traffic, in the event of a blockage or closure. Depending on the route, the detour length ranges from 19 to 29 miles. The proposed bridge crossing also responds to existing and projected needs by providing reliable and safe connections for freight, logging, pedestrians, bicycle and recreational vehicle traffic. The Project would create a reliable and sustainable regional transportation network, which is essential for the local economy and the mining and logging industries of the eastern Iron Range.
