About this Project

St. Louis County is leading a project to construct a J-Turn on US 169 at Hwy 25 (CSAH 25) located in Great Scott Township in 2025. Both MnDOT District 1 and St. Louis County submitted funding applications to the (HSIP) in November 2020 and were awarded funding for this project in February 2021.

The County Road Safety Plan ranks this intersection 10 out of 1,488 intersections which places this intersection in the top one (1) percent by risk. For the ten-year period of 2014 through 2023, there were seven (7) reported intersection crashes. One of these crashes, which occurred in 2017 and was an angle (i.e. T-bone) crash, resulted in two fatalities. The most frequent crash type observed for this period was an angle crash. Angle crashes have the greatest potential to result in serious outcomes.

The County Road Safety Plan recommends construction of a J-Turn on US 169 at this intersection. This project will include installation of roadway lighting to provide illumination of the intersection and U-turns. and roadway lighting are proven safety countermeasures to reduce the risk of serious crashes. MnDOT recently produced a about J-Turns which describes their benefits and how they work. You can learn more about J-Turns in Minnesota by clicking
